What does it mean if my “check engine” or “service engine soon” light comes on?

When your check engine light comes on, this is a warning that a component that affects the emissions of your car is not working correctly.  On modern cars, there are literally thousands of items that will turn on the check engine lamp, ranging from simple items, such as you forgot to tighten your gas cap after refueling, all the way to major internal engine problems.  Since there is only one light to let you know something is wrong, it is extremely important to find out the problem immediately.

What should I do when my check engine light turns on?
